We passed through two National Forests today, the Tonto and Apache-Sitgreaves, totaling over 5 million acres. The Tonto runs from the scenic Mogollon Rim to the city of Scottsdale and the Apache-Sitgreaves runs along the south rim of the Colorado plateau. Elevation is up to 8,000 feet in the northern pine country.
We drove through the Salt River Canyon (1,500 to 2,000 feet deep) and stopped at the bottom to admire the river and the Native jewelry that was being sold at the restroom site. Necklaces, bracelets, and dream catchers along with pottery. I took some pictures … some close-ups of the ground as the colors of the sedimentary rock layers were spectacular. I will find a wind to post them. Also took pictures of underneath the bridge. The bridge itself was a bright red and had symbols on the side.
Show Low Elevation: 6.347 Population: 7,695 It’s a big fishing, camping, hiking etc. type of area. The fire danger is extreme because of drought.
The up and down of elevation was beautiful … traffic slow on the steep and fast on the down … hot. We didn’t get to walk on one of our stops because of the heat.
All is well.
