We’re on our way out of town … at a Panara Bread to eat and do a quick email. July 3 update:

On Saturday Jim and I went to the grand opening of the Old Patent Office Building in Washington. I had been complaining about the 61/2 year remodeling but as I muttered "wow," over and over again, I realized what an incredible job they had done.

It was mobbed with people. Free ice cream (which ran out after 4 hours so I missed getting some). Great music at different galleries (blues, jazz, Mexican, and classical). At one point a woman asked me if I knew where the head was. I foolishly assumed she meant the artist Heade. So we went back and forth … head … Heade … and needless to say when I found the HEAD I knew what she was talking about. This hanging baby head entitles "Large Head" by Nina Levy is a stunner. If I’m not mistaken I’ve seen one of her heads in The National Gallery of Ottawa.

Most of our time in Washington, my husband needed his camera for his research. To my surprise and delight he began taking some fun photos for me. The big yellow truck is from Alberta. The tires are about 10 feet high and this truck is only ¼ of the size of the trucks that stayed home in Canada.

There is a fantastic Alberta exhibition on the Mall. I met a woman with her 2 young daughters and her backpack was full of Canadian flags. This time I did not assume they were Canadian or Americans wanting to be Canadian but asked. They had just been to the Mall and were now longing for a trip to Alberta.
